- Support -

Essential Opera is grateful to everyone who has supported us, including both private and corporate sponsors, our talented casts, brilliant volunteers, ever-patient friends and family, and granting organizations. The response to our productions so far has been incredibly encouraging.

Producing great opera is a financial challenge for Essential Opera’s co-founders and sole producers, despite this positive response and our commitment to keeping costs as low as possible. The cost of a performance far exceeds the revenue from accessibly-priced ticket sales. Depending on ever-dwindling government grants isn’t a practical way to plan for our future.

Therefore, we’ve had to get more creative. We are seeking private financial aid for our upcoming projects, and look to you for support. Organizations and individuals providing cash donations or other support have the option of being highly visible in the printed programs at performances, and can be recognized here on the website.

Current Endeavours and a Crowdfunding Success Story

Three emerging composers wrote short operas to be premiered as a triple-bill on our spring 2014 performance. We applied for numerous grants for the new-works project (and are proud to say we have successfully received two!). However, even this success does not cover the cost of the project, including rewarding the composers and librettists for their hard work at creating these wonderful pieces for us. In Feburary 2014, we launched an Indiegogo campaign for the remainder of our budget, and not only met but exceeded our goal, thanks to the generosity of 90 funders.

Following the spring performance, our fourth season won’t be quite over: we’ve been invited back to the New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts to remount a comic double bill, and just one week later, we’ll be reproducing the new works programme for the Open Ears Festival of Music and Sound. Remounting a show seems simpler than creating one from scratch, but the original performers still need additional rehearsal time; sometimes availability in artists’ busy schedules means recasting is a necessity; and we all need transportation and accommodation. All these logistical elements are made easier with funding.

Our Supporters Make a Difference

Since our second performance, we’ve been meeting our costs and providing honoraria to all our performers, thanks to fundraising and strong ticket sales. We opened our second season with a performance of Chérubin before an enthusiastic sellout crowd. That audience saw 23 generous donors and supporters listed in the program, including five highlighted on a page of advertisements. In addition, we held a silent auction at which bidders vied for 17 donated items. These included gift certificates for services, household ornaments, handmade crafts, wine, DVDs, and tickets to other arts events. Prior to and following the performance, we received a number of additional cash donations.

Our Season Two production of Alcina took place both in Toronto and on tour to the New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts. This meant taking the whole cast, instrumental ensemble, instruments and other equipment on the road! The 21 generous donors and advertisers listed in our program helped make that possible. In addition to cash, their gifts included rehearsal space, marketing materials, a huge amount of help at showtime and before, and two incredible trips to Toronto and back with a harpsichord in the back of a bright orange pet food van! That’s how you put on an opera. Without the help of these supporters, we could never have achieved these acclaimed period-instrument performances at such a high level.

Season Three began with a groundbreaking cabaret-concert-opera performance of The Threepenny Opera, and concluded with “Two Weddings & A Funeral”, a double-bill of Italian comedies. Both were extremely well-received by enthusiastic crowds in Toronto’s Heliconian Hall, who saw 22 donors listed in the programs, and five advertisements from local businesses. A few of these donations were extremely generous, enabling us to continue giving honoraria to our hard-working artists, even for these large-scale performances (15 performers in Threepenny; 13 in the double-bill). We also continued with the silent-auction fundraiser format; the silent auction for “Two Weddings” included 27 items, our largest yet.

Supporting the Future of Essential Opera

Our goals include continuing to provide honoraria to our amazing cast members, and fundraising for future productions like the ones our audiences have already loved. You can help by clicking the “Donate” button above or at the bottom of the page, or by getting in touch.
